China is packed with extraordinary sights, so picking our favourites has been really difficult! After all you’ve got megacities, monumental landmarks, a huge diversity of breathtaking landscapes and a rich heritage to delve into…here are some of our favourite sights:
Capital city and gateway to the country, Beijing has loads to see, including the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Summer Palace and, of course, the Great Wall. Built over 2,000 years ago there are many sections of the wall to visit, depending on what you are looking to experience. We think the best section is the Juyongguan Pass, which is well restored but not as crowded as other section. The views from the top are spectacular!
Xian is best known as the home of the renowned Terracotta Warriors, the life-size, life-like army of Qin Shi Huang, first emperor of China, created to protect him in the afterlife. The city also has huge old city walls – one of the few remaining in China, that you are able to walk or cycle around.
China’s megacity, Shanghai is a place of gleaming skyscrapers, great shopping, lovely restaurants and entertainment. There is still bits of the past scattered throughout – the classic Yu Garden for example, whilst the Bund showcases the colonial architecture of the city’s golden age in the 1930s. A relaxed cruise on the Huangpu River is the perfect place to get a glimpse of all aspects of the city.
The longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world, a cruise on the Yangtze is not only the perfect way to slow down, sit back and relax on tour, but also showcases the spectacular scenery of the Three Gorges. You’ll also get to see the world’s largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam.
Chengdu is the best place to go to see those mischievous, roly-poly fluffballs that are the Giant Pandas! Chengdu is capital of Sichuan province, the part of China that you find the most Giant Pandas in the wild and the Panda Conservation Centre just outside the city is the largest Giant Panda reserve in the world! If you’re lucky, there might even be some babies to see.
This is the place to come to cruise down the beautiful Li River, known as the “hundred-mile gallery”. The scenery here is absolutely magical thanks to the towering limestone columns that the river winds its way through. Cruises start in the city of Guilin and end in the lively town of Yangshuo, which is also the perfect base to explore these landscapes further.
High on a stark plateau and surrounded by the colossal peaks of the Himalayan Mountains, Tibet is wholly fascinating and unique destination. Lhasa, Tibet’s capital has a wealth of sights, including the Potala Palace, Sera Monastery and the sacred Jokhang Temple. In Tibet, you can also stand before the north face of the world’s tallest mountain, Mt Everest.
The Nine Villages Valley, or Jiuzhaigou National Park, is an area of spectacular mountain scenery dotted with virgin forest and dazzling blue lakes. It is named after the nine Tibetan villages that nestle within it. It is also Wendy’s very favourite place to visit in China!
Follow this ancient trading route through northwestern China to the legendary trading hubs of Kashgar and Jiayuguan, before potentially venturing even further into Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to explore the cities of Samarkand and Bukhara.
A land of expansive blue skies and yurt-dotted plains, Mongolia is an incredibly beautiful and fascinating place for the more intrepid traveller. Discover the wonders of the Gobi Desert and spend your nights in yurt camps for a wonderfully authentic experience.
Spring & Autumn March, April, May and September, October, November tend to be the most comfortable seasons for travel to China, when the temperatures are pleasant, the rainfall minimal and (in early spring and late autumn) less people travelling.
Summer June, July and August are typically hot and may be wetter and more humid than at other times of year.
Winter December, January and February are cold, and in the north can bring snow, but there are fewer travellers and often the best prices.
Southeast Asia is a destination that has it all – paradise beaches, tranquil temples, sensational food and everything inbetween. It is also incredibly fun and easy to explore, with an exciting range of historical, cultural and activity experiences that will appeal to every sort of traveller.
Our Southeast Asia programme takes you through some of the world's most inspiring destinations. Comprising five main countries – Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Burma plus new destination Borneo, each destination has its own unique history, culture and beauty, making each a delight to explore on its own, or as part of a multi-country itinerary. This is one of the most visited regions of the world and with Wendy Wu Tours, your clients are guaranteed to see the very best of these countries.
Read on for more information about each of our featured countries:
Rich in history and culture, Vietnam has been heavily influenced by 2000 years of Chinese domination, French colonialism and the independence movement of the 20th century. Natural beauty, friendly people, delicious food and memories of a turbulent history are what bring people to this enchanting nation.
Cambodia has emerged from a tragic past to become one of Asia’s most charming destinations. With beautiful old colonial cities, undiscovered beaches and unspoiled tracts of forest, it is still the polite and lovely Khmer people that will stick in your memories. Oh and of course, there’s the magnificence of Angkor…need we say more? (We do, it’s a few slides on!)
A country that encapsulates Asia old and new, Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that was never occupied by a colonial power, so Thai culture is wonderfully undiluted. Discover capital city Bangkok, a bustling, modern city, meet hilltribes of the hilly north or utterly chill out on the beaches of the south, Thailand has something for everyone.
A destination unlike any other, Burma offers unsurpassed encounters for those with an adventurous spirit and an open mind. Long closed to the outside world and only recently fully reopened to tourists, the lack of outside influence gives those who explore Burma a taste of an Asia of times gone by. But hurry, things are changing rapidly!
Still somewhat overlooked for its close neighbours, Laos is Southeast Asia’s most captivating destination. Quiet, less developed and devoutly Buddhist, this is also a country of incredible beauty, from the lush hills of the north to the unique river islands of the Mekong in the south. You won’t be able to help delighting in this gorgeous destination!
The island of Borneo is split between Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia – our new Borneo tour visits the two states of Malaysian Borneo, Sabah and Sarawak. Home to some of the world’s richest ecosystems, a rich tribal heritage, paradise beaches and of course the beautiful orangutan, Borneo is a destination ripe for exploration.
Southeast Asia covers so many wonderful places, choosing a top 10 has not been easy! We are looking at five countries each with a wealth of fascinating history – old and more recent, a diverse range of landscapes, beaches, golden temples and so much more. Here they are, some of our favourite sights:
Halong Bay, the ‘Bay of Descending Dragons’, is one of Vietnam’s top tourist sights, and it’s easy to see why! Here, turquoise waters are studded with thousands of jagged karst towers, islets and islands, creating a wonderfully picturesque panorama, said to have been created by great dragons – hence the name. Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is best explored on a cruise. These cruises usually include visits to caves, floating villages and opportunities to kayak.
This delightful riverside town was once a major port, a heritage that can still be seen in the grand old buildings and shophouses that line its traffic-free cobbled streets. The influence of traders from around the world means that the architecture is eclectic – you’ll spot Chinese, Japanese and European flourishes throughout the town. Hoi An is a laidback place that is just as much about strolling, eating at the plethora of lovely cafes and restaurants and browsing in the shops as exploring.
Known as Vietnam’s ‘rice bowl’ due to the amount of rice and other produce grown here, the Mekong Delta, close to Saigon in Vietnam’s south, is lush, green and plentiful. It is a patchwork of orchards, rice paddies, palm tree, sugar plantations and fields of vegetables, and crisscrossed with waterways. These canals are a hive of activity, plied by boats piled high with produce and local fishermen building up their daily catch. The Mekong Delta is best explored by boat, and there are plenty of local cottage industries, such as coconut candy factories, to visit as you explore.
The temples of Angkor occupy the Angkor Archaeological Park, a 400-kilometre squared area just outside the town of Siem Reap. The seat of the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries, the temples were lost to the jungle before being bought to the attention of the West by Frenchman Henri Mouhot in 1860. Whilst the whole site is UNESCO World Heritage-listed, the most famous temple is the magnificent Angkor Wat. Built in the early 12th century, it is the largest religious monument in the world and even appears on Cambodia’s flag.
Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh sits on the banks of the Mekong River. It is a charming city, a blend of old colonial and modern development, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, museums and things to do and see. Phnom Penh is the best place in Cambodia to learn about the horrific reign of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s, whilst the glittering Royal Palace and National Museum give a taste of rich Khmer culture. The city’s laidback disposition makes it an easy place to while away a few days!
Sat at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan rivers, Luang Prabang is a small city in the north of Laos and its most popular destination to visit. Considered the spiritual heart of the country, it is home to a high concentration of wats – 34 on them are UNESCO-listed, and is home to over 1,000 monks. Visiting wats and temples in Luang Prabang is extra special as they are still working institutions, and there are usually a few monks around who would love to practice speaking English! Luang Prabang’s night market is an excellent place to buy handicrafts from the ethnic minority groups that live in the hills around the city, and Kuang Si Falls are a great visit too.
Laos’ Plain of Jars is an unsolved ancient mystery! The large rock hewn jars, measuring between 1 metre and 3 metres in height and diameter, are thought to have been created between 500BC and 200AD but why, nobody knows! There are 90 different jar sites spread over an area of several hundred square kilometres, in the spectacular landscapes of mountain peaks, green hills and pine forests.
Located in Thailand’s north, Chiang Mai is a laidback, atmospheric city popular as the gateway to the Thailand’s rugged highlands. The city itself is full of historical gems – within its old city there are 30 old temples that date from the Lanna Kingdom (13th to 18th century), as well as traditional architecture and a couple of excellent museums. The hills close to the city are home to many ethnic minority hilltribes who are still living the subsistence lifestyles of their ancestors – there are plenty of options for visiting a community, be it by hiking or road.
The temples of Bagan are scattered across a plain in a bend of the Irrawaddy River. Once part of the Kingdom of Bagan, these 2,000 structures are a seriously impressive sight, especially if you can climb up into a high place for an overview of the scene. It is thought that in the golden age of Bagan, between the 9th and 13th centuries, that there were more than 10,000 temples, pagodas and stupas on the plain – today you still have the largest concentration of Buddhist temples anywhere in the world. Venturing inside many of the temples reveals beautiful frescoes and carvings or spaces that are still used for worship today.
Up in the Shan Hills of Shan State, Inle Lake offers a fascinating glimpse of a different side of Burma. The Intha people live close to or on the water in stilt villages and grow produce in innovative floating gardens. They also have an intriguing row technique – you’ll see fishermen doing it – which makes use of their leg rather than arms. The lake is, of course, best explored by boat, but there are also plenty of interesting sights on the banks of the lake, ranging from local markets to the atmospheric Indein.
Although topography plays a big part in the weather of each of Southeast Asia’s nations, very generally they all share a typical tropical climate with a dry season and a wet season. Here is a very quick overview of the climate of each country:
Burma

Cambodia
June to October – wet season. Starting very humid and gradually cooling as the season progresses – the heaviest rain is August and September. November to May – dry season. This season is spilt into two parts, cool and dry from November to February (temps in the mid to late 20s) and hot and dry from March to May (temps in the early to mid 30s).
Laos
October to April – dry season. The cool and dry season is November to February and the hot and dry season is March and April, the build up to the monsoon. May to September – wet seasons. Rain gets heavy and more constant from late July to early September.
Thailand
North of Bangkok, the dry season is November to May and the monsoon arrives in May and stays until October. South of Bangkok, the rainy season depends on the coast. The east coast (Andaman), September to to December is rainy, whilst on the west coast (Gulf of Thailand), April to October is rainy. The rest of the time both coasts are dry and sunny.
Vietnam
In Vietnam there are big variations between the north and south of the country. In the north, May to October brings rain and humidity and November to April is cool and dry, whilst in the south, May to October is warm and wet and November to April is dry and hot. There are variations again in the central region – January to August is hot and dry and September to November is rainy!

Bhutan has to be one of the world’s most interesting destinations. Wedged in the Himalayas and protected by mountains the country has always been isolated, giving it a magical and enigmatic appeal. It also means that Bhutan's culture is perfectly intact ad to keep it that way the government tightly controls tourism. In fact, the preservation of culture and Bhutan’s spectacular environment are two of the pillars of the concept of ‘gross national happiness’ which governs Bhutanese society and slows the process of modernisation. Considered one of the world’s most beautiful buildings, the Taj Mahal was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal. It took 20,000 workmen to realise Shah Jahan’s vision, but what a vision it was! The perfect symmetry and white marble give the building an ethereal quality only enhanced by the way that the fa?ade reflect the moods of the sky throughout the day. Anyone who is visiting India needs to make sure the Taj Mahal is on their itinerary, it really is that good!
The city of Varanasi sits on the banks of the River Ganges and is believed to be one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. It is one of Hinduism most sacred places – it is believed that if you die in Varanasi, you go straight to nirvana. Whilst the ancient streets are lined with old temples, it is at Varanasi’s riverfront ghats that you’ll experience what the city is really about. Here, thousands of Hindus come to bathe, perform religious rituals and cremate their dead every day – it is a rich and magical but confronting place to be. The ghats are best viewed at sunrise from the river.
Amongst the lush greenery of India’s most southerly state are a network of rivers, canals and lagoons that make up the backwaters. You’ll get to see what life is like for those living on and around the water, spot bird and wildlife and enjoy the verdant scenery.
India’s most famous national park, visitors flock to Ranthambore for one thing; Bengal tigers. Formerly the hunting ground of the Maharajahs of Jaipur, the park is centred around the old Ranthambore Fort, which is easy to spot when out on safari. Easily accessible between Jaipur and Agra, there are about 50 tigers known to live within its boundaries – they are also known for being reasonably easy to spot. Other animals that call the park home are leopards, nilgai, sloth bear and 300 species of bird.
Sigiriya, Lion Rock, rises out of the flat, arid land of Sri Lanka’s central plains. It is part of the island’s ‘Cultural Triangle’, an area that stretches between the ruins of the old cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa and the town of Dambulla and is a treasure trove of rich Sri Lankan culture. On top of the rock at Sigiriya you’ll find the remains of the palace of King Kassappa from the 5th century AD – you’ll have to pass through the gigantic lion’s paws, through galleries and up staircases and past frescoes to reach it. It’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982.
Elephants, elephants, elephants – that’s Udawalawe National Park! A vast tract of grassland around the Udawalawe Reservoir, there are about 600 elephants here, along with serpent eagles, wild buffalo, sambar deer and even a few leopards. Close by is the Elephant Transit Home, supported by the Born Free Foundation, a project that takes in and prepares orphaned juvenile elephants to be returned to the wilds of the national park. Visit at feeding time to see the boisterous youngsters having their milk.
Located in Sri Lanka’s highlands, the cool climes of Nuwara Eliya are perfect for the cultivation of tea and the area is covered in lush green plantations. The town itself was built by the British in the 19th century - charmingly Victorian, it is a delight to wander and provides some excellent colonial style accommodation. Time in Nuwara Eliya is the perfect way to escape the heat of the lowlands, and it is the perfect place to do a bit of hiking. There are plenty of trails to beautiful waterfalls through untouched wilderness for those who fancy it.
Nepal’s vibrant capital, Kathmandu is a hub of cultural and artistic heritage as well as the heart of the country. The city is full of beautiful medieval buildings from its time as the capital of the Malla kings from the 13th to 16th centuries – some of the city’s greatest monuments such as the Durbar Square date from this time. Wandering the narrow streets of the old town is the best way to soak up the buzz of the city and catch a glimpse of the diverse groups of people who call it home. Kathmandu is also the gateway to Nepal as a whole – from here you can reach the country’s many other wonders.
On the shores of Lake Phewa, Pokhara sits in a balmy valley in the shadow of the Annapurna and Manaslu mountain ranges, each containing 8,000 metre plus peaks. As you can imagine, the scenery is spectacular and the town is wonderfully laidback, even though it is also the hub of Nepal’s adventure activity scene. Pokhara is home to the International Mountain Museum and the Gurkha Museum, whilst the bustling waterfront is lined with hotels, bar and restaurants. Away from the town the lakeshores are densely forested and good for hiking, and there are a number of viewpoints to ascend to.
Bhutan’s most iconic sight, Taktsang Monastery or Tiger’s Nest, sits precariously on a cliff face 900 metres above the Paro Valley, about 12 kilometres from the town of Paro. The monastery was built in 1692 around eight caves in the cliffs, where it is said that Guru Padmasambhava meditated after he bought Buddhism to Bhutan. To reach it you must walk up through a beautiful woodland for about 1 hour 30 to 2 hours – a walk that is well worth the effort!
The weather for each of these nations varies significantly, so here is a quick overview of the climate of each:
India
Due to its size, India’s climate is very varied but is dictated by the monsoon. The main monsoon works northwards from Kerala from June to September, whilst the east coast gets a second soaking between October and December. Winter, which is the same time as ours, brings cold winds to the north but hot weather in the south. There is somewhere to go in India at any time of year.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with two seasons, wet and dry. There are two monsoon seasons – one from May to October that hits the south, west and central regions of the country, and the second from December to March which hits the northeast of the country. Temperatures stay in the late 20s all year round.
Nepal
The altitude of Nepal’s north means cool summers and severe winters, but in the lowland south you get mild winters and tropical summers. June to September is monsoon season.
Bhutan
The south of Bhutan, near the border with India, has a hot, humid subtropical climate year-round, whilst the slightly higher central region has warm summers and cool dry winters (at the same time as ours). The farther north you go, the higher the altitude and therefore lower temperatures.
South America is one incredible continent. Why? Well, where do we begin! It’s full of incredible nature – from the Amazon Rainforest to the mighty Iguacu, there is so much to explore. There’s a fascinating indigenous heritage, think Machu Picchu, and lots of colonial history too, with many cities boasting plenty of beautiful architecture. Oh, and there’s the great food and wine to indulge in – Peru’s foodie reputation is on the rise, and Argentinian and Chilean wines are world class. We challenge anyone to resist that infectious fun and fiery Latino rhythm that pulses throughout the continent, and not come home ready to go back for more!
This Latin America programme brings together some of the world’s most inspiring sights across seven incredible countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama and Peru. Whichever country or countries your clients choose to visit, they will be embarking on an itinerary that is packed with unique history, culture and beauty.
Read on for more information about each of our featured countries:
Argentina is best known for steak, tango, football and gauchos, but these are just some of the many delights that make exploring this country so glorious. We mean, there are the thunderous waters of Iguacu in the north; the vibrant Buenos Aires, capital city; the wine region of Mendoza and lakes of Bariloche; and the glaciers and mountains of the bleakly beautiful Patagonia…who could resist all this?
In the largest and liveliest country in South America, you can’t really blame the Brazilian people for their desire to live life to the full, just look at where they live! From the captivating samba rhythms of the cities, to vast tracts of rainforest that make up some of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes, to spectacular beaches, the magic of Brazil is not hard to find.
A slither of land between the Andes and Pacific Ocean, Chile is a destination that packs a lot of punch! A country of glorious landscapes it is topped and tailed by two extremes - the bleak beauty of the Atacama Desert and the rugged majesty of Patagonia, whilst inbetween you’ll find volcanoes, lakes and winelands. It’s safe to say that Chile does the great outdoors on an epic scale!
Colombia has shaken off its reputation for drugs and violence to become South America’s new star destination, and it’s easy to see why! It’s got spectacular landscapes, two magnificent coastlines (Pacific and Caribbean) fringed with beautiful beaches, charming colonial towns and cities and a coffee region! All of which can be explored whilst enjoying the country’s wonderfully laidback vibe.
Costa Rica is home to Central America’s most impressive and unspoiled nature, with lush rainforest and verdant cloudforest galore! With both a Pacific and Caribbean coast, each boasting paradise beaches, towering volcanoes, and a wonderful and colourful assortment of creatures that call it home, Costa Rica is an ever-popular destination to explore!
Connecting South and Central America, Panama is best-known for its world-famous canal, the 48-mile-long waterway which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. A wonderfully cosmopolitan country, in Panama it’s easy to flit from vibrant cities, to atmospheric colonial ruins, to lush rainforest, all topped off with a few days on one of the many incredibly beaches!
Peru is a country that is high on many a bucket list. Head high into the Andes to explore the Incan heartlands of Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, where locals sport colourful traditional dress and there are woolly llamas galore. Then there’s Lake Titicaca, charming Arequipa and colonial capital Lima to visit too, each giving a glimpse of a different side of this amazing country.
Choosing our top sights across seven incredible countries has not been easy. Each has its own wealth of wonders, be they cultural, natural, urban or rural! But here they are, some of our favourite South America sights:
One of the world’s most iconic sights, this 15th century Incan citadel didn’t come to international attention until 1911, when it was stumbled upon by American explorer Hiram Bingham. Not much is known about why it was built or why is was abandoned, but its position high up in the Andes makes it all the more enigmatic and spectacular.
On the border between Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu’s cascades stretch three magnificent kilometres across as the Rio Iguazu plunges off the edge of the Parana plateau. You can view the falls from both sides of the border, each giving a different yet spectacular perspective of this natural wonder.
The rock and ice wilderness at the tip of South America, Patagonia is an unspoiled land of immense natural beauty. There’s glaciers, mountains, lakes and sea with opportunities to spot a wealth of wildlife from penguins and seals in the Beagle Strait to guanaco and flamingos on land.
The Colombian Caribbean Sea-side city of Cartagena boasts South America’s most beautiful colonial old town. Colourful houses overflowing with bougainvillea line vibrant cobbled streets that lead to charming squares and Spanish churches. Perfect for strolling!
Brazil’s most famous city, set in a magnificent location on Guanabara Bay, Rio is an energetic, exciting metropolis full of passion! Backed with the constant thump of a samba beat, iconic sights like Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana Beach and Sugarloaf Mountain are easy to explore!
Considered by many to be an engineering marvel, the Panama Canal stretches across Panama, connecting the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. Today, hundreds of huge cargo ships pass along it, and visitors can take to its water on a cruise too.
When it comes to biodiversity, Costa Rica is at the head of the pack. Monteverde’s luscious cloudforest is packed with native flora and fauna, such as ring-tailed coati, sloths, frogs and toucans. It is also incredibly easy to explore!
The world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon is home to over 16,000 species of creature! Exploring amongst its lush, green beauty is always an adventure, be it by hiking or cruising some of its many waterways. You can even meet the tribespeople who still live a traditional lifestyle within it!
As your clients are venturing all the way over to South or Central America, they might as well make the most of their time over there! We’ve got a range of awesome extensions that they can pop on pre- or post- tour. Some, such as the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island or a Patagonia cruise, offering even more adventure, whilst others, beach stays in Costa Rica, Panama and Brazil, are purely for relaxation.

The Victoria Mekong (VMK) was conceived as a ‘green’ ship, right from the beginning. From construction to operations, our objective has always been to offer the ‘greenest’ ship experience in the Mekong Delta by implementing best environmental practices. We support a green ship for a greener Mekong!
All efforts are made to eliminate plastic from the ship including complimentary refillable bottles in the cabins with water stations located on each deck, waste bins lined with washable inserts (no plastic bin bags), no plastic straws, and no plastic bags or containers used for food delivery. Our aim is to become 100% plastic free.
Our ship is equipped with a freshwater generator that processes river water into both fresh and drinkable water. In the first phase, the river water is processed through water purification equipment before being stored in the main freshwater tanks to service the entire vessel. In the second phase, the fresh water passes through the Reverse Osmosis and UV Sterilizer Unit before being pumped into the water filling stations.
The Victoria Mekong maintains two hot water heating systems. Solar panels located on the ship’s rooftop deck contribute to a third hot water system. Pump systems and machinery are equipped with backups to ensure that a potential equipment failure would not affect the operation of the entire ship.
Equipped with a Wartsila Hamworthy plant, our vessel treats all waste according to the highest environmental protection standards of the international Maritime Organization (IMO). The toilet system evacuates to the black water holding tanks located beneath the lower deck. All grey water from showers, wash basins, floor drains, and washing machines evacuates to the grey water holding tanks which are also located beneath the lower deck. Waste (black and grey) is also treated through this sewage treatment plant.
We have proven that there is a link between energy consumption and the speed of a ship. The Victoria Mekong navigates at a leisurely pace, 6 knots/hour on average, contributing to low energy consumption and low impact on the riverbanks. This allows passengers to fully enjoy the scenery and the on-going ‘live show’ of activity along the river. The two main engines and two generators incorporate the latest core engine system innovations to provide maximum benefits in power density, performance, emissions, and fuel efficiency.
The ship is also equipped with a high-quality marine A/C system, with autonomous in-room control. Passengers can opt not to use the A/C and are offered mosquito nets to place on their windows, should they choose to keep them open at night.
And lastly, the Victoria Mekong is equipped with a wet exhaust muffler system to cool down and filter the emissions from all engines before discharging them and to suppress vibrations and disturbances from the engines.

River cruising has always been an in-demand part of our tour range, for group and independent travellers alike. Journey along the mighty Yangtze and Mekong rivers, voyage down the Red River towards Halong Bay, meander along the Irrawaddy in Myanmar, or unwind surrounded amongst the serenity of the Kerala backwaters in India. The never-ending scenery, culture and riverbank riches will fascinate your clients!
The Yangtze River has been the lifeline of China for millennia. It was on the river banks that some of the earliest Chinese cultures existed; ever since, it's been essential for agriculture, for transportation and for the development of the economy. Cruising the mighty Yangtze slows down the pace of your client's journey and helps them see China from a new perspective.
On board our Yangtze river cruises, clients will sleep in comfort with private balconies, enjoy all meals on board along with entertainment throughout the day. They will also get to explore each day, with shore excursions taking them to the Three Gorges Dam project, along the Goddess Stream or to Fengdu Ghost City. Most Wendy Wu Yangtze cruises include 4 nights aboard, starting in Yichang then travelling upstream to Chongqing.
The Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Venturing into the Mekong Delta region is to glimpse a whole other side of Vietnam. This area is known as the country’s rice bowl, producing a third of the agricultural output from its rich soil. The region is a whole floating world, with houses, restaurants and markets all on water – taking a boat through the canals is the best way to explore, waving at farmers and water buffalos on the riverbank.
Red River and Halong Bay, Vietnam
Known as Vietnam's jewel in the crown, and the top tourist attraction in the north-east, Halong Bay has around two thousand islets rising from its emerald waters. The best way to make the most of its stunning beauty is to board a traditional junk boat or a luxury cruise ship. Tour guides will point out the amazing stalagmites and stalactites in a number of caves that are dotted around the bay. Whilst on-board clients can try some of the local delicacies and fresh seafood or rise early to practice tai chi or go kayaking.
Irrawaddy, Myanmar
The Irrawaddy River continues to be Myanmar's main highway with many locals living and working on its lush banks. Experience a side of the country that many have yet to explore, from the comfort of an elegant Pandaw cruise boat, sailing from Mandalay to Bagan.
Kerala's Backwaters
The backwaters of Kerala are a unique waterborne world – a colossal web of lakes, lagoons, canals and rivers lined with towering palms and lush foliage. The waters are plied by kettuvallams, or houseboats, that were originally barges used to transport grain. Now they offer the very best way to explore the backwaters, cruising lazily amongst the maze to give you a chance to enjoy life on the water and anchoring overnight for you to drift off to the sound of lapping water. Local food is prepared on board for an all-round authentic Keralan experience.

The last frontier of travel surely must be Antarctica. This pristine wilderness remains remote, untamed and is an adventurer's wonderland. Bask in the stunning ethereal beauty of gigantic icebergs, gaze at the abundance of wildlife and regale in tales of explorers from a bygone era. Antarctica is an awe-inspiring destination unlike any other!
The most common reaction upon reaching the White Continent is a sense of awe and a feeling of insignificance - the experience is beyond words. You'll discover that Antarctica is a land of extremes, one moment you'll be overcome with a feeling of complete isolation and silence, and at the next you'll be inspired by nature as a glacier cracks like a bolt of lightning and breaks off or a curious penguin sky-rockets into your zodiac for a visit.
Life on an Expedition Cruise is completely unlike regular cruising. Enjoy lectures and workshops presented by an experienced Expedition Team whilst at sea and spend time on deck looking for wildlife. With multiple landings in remote places by Zodiac, you may have the chance to sea kayak, go flightseeing or stand-up paddle boarding just to name a few!
Rest assured, the vessels Wendy Wu Tours have selected are well-known, award winning and small. The fleet can accommodate between 128-199 passengers making it ideal for Antarctic expeditions. Small ships can take you to areas that larger vessels are unable to reach. Not all landings can accommodate big groups, so smaller ships mean smaller groups, thus leaving a smaller environmental footprint.
Antarctica has a short tourist season, with the best time to travel being between November and March. Begin the season with birds and penguins courting and mating, whilst December and January experience 20 hours of sunshine a day, warmer temperatures, and the ice melting. Later in the season, it’s time for whale watching and seeing the penguin chicks fledging, while temperatures begin to drop again.
USHAUAIA – Ushuaia is a resort town in Argentina. It's located on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago at the southernmost tip of South America. It is nicknamed the 'End of the World' because of its windswept location sitting upon a steep hill surrounded by the Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel. Ushauaia is the gateway for most cruises to Antarctica. It also offers fantastic skiing opportunities at nearby resorts, challenging hiking trails and other smaller expeditions to nearby Isla Yécapasela (commonly referred to as Penguin Island).
FALKLAND ISLANDS – Located 400km northeast of Tierra del Fuego, the Falklands (or Malvinas) are of course known for their wildlife. This archipelago is home to Magellanic, gentoo and southern rockhopper penguins, the largest Black Browned Albatross colony in the world, plus two endemic bird species - the flightless Falkland steamer duck and the Cobb's wren. The archipelago consists of two main islands - East and West Falkland - which are separated by the Falkland Sound. Port Stanley is a favoured landing site for ships as the town has an eclectic charm offering a unique British outpost feel. Stanley has a number of local feeling pubs, and visiting the cathedral and museum here is highly recommended.
SOUTH GEORGIA - South Georgia is considered the 'Galapagos of Antarctica' because of its beaches that are blanketed in king penguins and elephant seals. South Georgia is one of the most fertile breeding grounds in the world for sub-Antarctic wildlife. It is also a bird watcher's paradise as albatross and giant petrels can be seen in abundance. Once a popular and historical base for whalers and sealers, South Georgia is scattered with abandoned relics and evidence of human activity from centuries gone by. One of the most significant sites on the island is the settlement of Grytviken. Grytviken was the first whaling station to be established in sub-Antarctic waters and is the site of Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of the most famous Antarctic explorers, final resting place.
ANTARCTIC PENINSULA – The Antarctic Peninsula is a 1,300 km stretch of land and ice extending northward from the Antarctic continent towards South America. It's an exquisite environment of isolation, rich wildlife, history and awe-inspiring landscapes. You'll experience some of the most unique wildlife viewing, and inspiring scenery, as you reach the 'White Continent'. You'll easily see why Antarctica is a land of extremes. Chinstrap, Adélie and Gentoo penguins are found on the Peninsula, along with Weddell, fur, crab-eater and leopard seals. Keep a lookout for Antarctic whales, such as minkes, while on a Zodiac cruise too. Each day, and each excursion from the ship, will present a new collection of creatures to delight you and keep your camera busy! Be assured that your Expedition Team onboard ship will take care of you at each excursion - whether you are Zodiac cruising, visiting a historical site or consorting within the many penguin colonies.
SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS – The South Shetlands are a string of nine islands running parallel to the northwest coast of the Antarctic peninsula. They are almost completely covered in ice, with only 2-3 percent being ice free along the coast where all notable life is found. The most noteworthy islands are best described here.
King George Island is a-typical, and the least isolated because of the 12 international base stations found there. The island sits low and is flat with a variety of wildlife including Antarctic terns, chinstrap and Adelie penguins, blue-eyed shags and southern giant petrels.
Elephant Island is full of history as it is here that 22 members of Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic expedition were stranded for 135 days, during 1915, after the Endurance was crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea. Landings on Elephant Island are infrequent as it is often too difficult approaching due to poor sea and weather conditions.
Deception Island is famous as a collapsed (but still active) volcanic cone. Protected by high cliffs and a narrow entrance called Neptune's Bellows, this wide amphitheatre is one of the safest natural harbours in the world. It was first used by sealers as a base for operations and then later by whalers.
On the protected western end of Livingston Island, there a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) under the Antarctic Treaty as it contains the greatest concentration of 19th-century historical sites in Antarctica.
Lastly, Penguin Island was named by the explorer Bransfield in 1820. It's a small volcanic island that allows visitors a relatively easy walk up to the highest point called Deacon Peak, affording excellent views of the surrounding seas.
Hong Kong has transformed from a small fishing village to one of the world's most exciting cities. The bustling sidewalks, skyscrapers and neon signs can seem chaotic at first, but Hong Kong is known for being safe and easy to navigate. It offers visitors a dynamic mix where east meets west, with over 150 years if colonial history and ageless Chinese traditions teamed with numerous attractions, unrivalled shopping and a vast array of food choices.
