While not a widely recognised religious holiday, plenty of locals still like to take part in the celebrations – Christmas is a great excuse to have fun - with lovely illuminations and window displays brightening up the major cities. More recently, handing out gifts within social circles on Christmas Eve has started to become the norm, with elaborately boxed apples a popular choice because the Mandarin phrase for Christmas Eve ‘pingan ye’ and apple ‘pingguo’ sound phonetically similar.

The cold weather at this time of year also means there is a good chance of snow – imagine standing on the Great Wall surrounded by snow-covered peaks and valleys!

Special Festive Experiences on Christmas in China

Christmas in China travels from Beijing through Xian and Leshan to Chengdu, exploring many treasures, like the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven, Terracotta Warriors and Leshan’s Grand Buddha.

You’ll arrive in China on Christmas Eve and get immediately into the spirit. Christmas Day is spent walking on the magnificent Great Wall of China and visiting the exquisite Summer Palace, followed by a festive feast of China’s most famous dishes, including delicious Peking Duck. On Boxing Day you’ll embark on a tour of Imperial Beijing, discovering Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven, with a rip-roaring Chinese Acrobatic show in the evening. Then New Year’s is spent falling in love with the adorable pandas of Chengdu at the city’s famous Panda Conservation Centre.

Special Festive Experiences on China: Winter Wonderland

Journeying from bustling Shanghai to Harbin’s incredible Ice and Snow Festival, tick off China’s greatest sights and experiences, including the pandas of Chengdu, the Terracotta Warriors and the imperial wonders of Beijing. You’ll end up in the northern city of Harbin, where you’ll be gobsmacked by the ice sculptures and carvings of the Ice Lantern Festival and Ice and Snow World – the winter wonderland you’d be searching for.

Christmas Day is spent in Shanghai, exploring the city sights, wandering Christmas markets and tasting gastronomic delights. In the evening you’ll cruise the Huangpu River and sit down to a German-style festive feast. New Years is also a magical time, spent on and around the Great Wall of China. On the 31st, discover Gubei Watertown, wandering its cobbled streets or relaxing in its hot springs. At twilight, you’ll soar up to the heights of the Great Wall to admire the incredible illuminations before a New Year’s Eve dinner back down on the ground. Then, begin the New Year on the more remote Jinshanling section of the Wall, with a champagne toast to celebrate.
