This national park and wildlife sanctuary sits high in the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats close to Thekkady, Kerala, a sweeping expanse of lush jungle, grasslands, rolling hills and lake and river ecosystems.
Full of scenic beauty and a rich biodiversity, the park shelters a whole host of flora and fauna. Designated both an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve, there are around 2,000 Asian elephants here, and 35-40 tigers, who tend to stick to the areas of thick tree coverage. At the heart of the reserve is a man-made lake, built by the British over 100 years ago – a popular pastime is a lake cruise – which is a great place to spot the wild boar, sloth bears, bison, sambar and langur who also live here as well as some of the 266 species of birds.
