If a glimpse of the Jurassic is anywhere on earth, it is in Komodo National Park. These stunning, nutrient-rich waters are home to an abundance of marine life, including over 260 species of coral and 1,000 species of tropical fish, which in turn sustain the archipelago’s enormous population of brightly-coloured tropical birds. Of course, the park’s most famous residents are the enormous Komodo dragons; growing up to ten feet long, these are Earth’s largest lizards, and can only be visited with a trained Komodo Park ranger.

Labuan Bajo, on the east coast of Flores, is the ideal jumping-off point for adventures around Komodo’s archipelago. Base yourself here and take daily boat trips around the islands, including Komodo and Rinca Islands, each home to dragons, water buffalo, deer, wild horses and more. Don’t forget your camera – besides the plethora of wildlife, Komodo is home to one of only seven pink-sand beaches in the world.

The crystal-clear waters around Kelor and Angel Islands are ideal spots from which to swim and snorkel (equipment provided) among the fish and corals. Don’t panic if you find yourself swimming alongside the local jellyfish – they’re one of the only species in the world that don’t sting.
