High up on your list of natural attractions on holidays to Malaysia should be Bako National Park, a couple of hours from Kuching. Small though it is, Bako boasts a diverse range of habitats – in fact, it is the perfect introduction to Sarawak’s magnificent wilderness and the wildlife that lives within it. Encompassing the northern tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula, you can follow well-marked trails through swamp, scrub, mangrove, forest and along a breath-takingly beautiful coastline of small bays, cliffs, beaches and rock formations. Bako is said to be one of the best places in Sarawak for wildlife experiences, so on your visit, keep an eye out for long-tailed macaques, silver leaf monkeys, squirrels, monitor lizards and the unique and endangered proboscis monkey, endemic to Borneo.
