Fly to Panama’s capital this morning. Panama City is considered Central America’s most cosmopolitan city in Central America. This afternoon visit the Miraflores locks on the Panama Canal, an engineering marvel. Stop off at the visitor centre where you can learn all about the canal’s construction and its international importance.
Travel into the Panamanian rainforest today to visit a traditional village of the Embera people. Arriving by dug out canoe, you’ll be welcomed to the village with traditional music and dancing. Spend the morning learning about this rainforest community’s way of life. (B,L)
Hop on a train and travel to the Caribbean city of Colón, which sits on the opposite end of the Panama Canal to Panama City. After, visit colourful Portobelo. Once Central America’s greatest port, this quiet little fishing village is guarded by the Caribbean Sea and its gentle hills. The village still preserves features of that glorious past which are visible in its colonial wooden houses and buildings.
