Journey up onto the 'Roof of the World' on this epic railway adventure

The line that was said to be impossible to build opened in 2006, running 1,215 miles from the city of Xining in China up onto the Tibetan plateau, watched over by towering Himalayan peaks, to terminate at Tibet’s capital, Lhasa.

Nicknamed the ‘Sky Road’ in China, it is an incredible feat of engineering, much of it built on permafrost, crossing high altitude desert, passing snow-capped mountains and journeying over numerous rushing rivers and dramatic gorges. Although not one of China's high-speed trains due to the tricky terrain, the Qinghai-Tibet offers something much more exciting - epic adventure!

All aboard the world’s highest railway as you travel from China up into Tibet on this once in a lifetime journey.

What to expect on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway

A Journey to Remember

A Journey to Remember

Onboard the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, you’ll cross barren plateau, 5,000 metre plus Himalayan mountains, high altitude desert, grasslands, huge lakes, glaciers, and many herds of woolly yaks. But what makes this one of the most adventurous train journeys out there is the Tanggula Pass, the highest point of any railway in the world, at 5,231 metres above sea level. It may take 21 hours, but with those views outside the window, it will fly by.
Life Onboard

Life Onboard

The specifically designed carriages of the Qinghai-Tibet railway are air-conditioned and, as the train climbs higher, oxygen is pumped throughout the train to keep the affects of altitude at bay. The restaurant car onboard offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving up typical Chinese and Tibetan food like rice, noodles and soups. There is seating that allows you to seat and eat, plus a small bar that sells tea, coffee and beer.
